(01/09/10) Laurel, MD – This holiday season, several Rent-A-Wreck locations got involved in charities and organizations aiming to help out kids and soldiers serving overseas. Working alongside their customers to gather and donate a countless number of supplies, these locations showed what it truly means to be part of the community that gives back.
Rent-A-Wreck of Crown Point owner Pat Shafer and his managers Bill and Teri Hill pulled off a very impressive holiday drive to support the troops. The drive, which began shortly before Thanksgiving, was a complete success resulting in a 16ft box truck being filled to capacity with clothing, snacks and supplies for US armed forces members serving overseas. Those supplies were bundled onto pallets and shipped by UPS. The latest from the organization was that the supplies were shipped to and received by an army unit deployed overseas.
In honor of this big drive, Pat organized an event featuring appearances by the mayor and several Marines from the local recruiting center, as well as a performance by a local singer. The event drew a big crowd, as well as attention from several media outlets, resulting in word of mouth coverage which helped Pat achieve even more donation than what he had originally expected. The charitable organization that received the donation, ustroopcarepackage.com - said that donation, which totaled just over 1500 pounds was the largest single donation they had received to date. Listen to the radio interview with Pat Shafer and see photos taken during the drive here!
Not to be outdone, Rent-A-Wreck of Billings, MT owner and operator Wes Nussbaum donated part of his office space to the charitable organization, 'Computers 4 Kids' . The organization accepts donated computers and computer equipment, then refurbishes them and makes them available to children and schools free of charge. The Billings Gazette ran an article on the charity that mentioned Rent-A-Wreck and Nussbaum and can be read here.
At Rent-A-Wreck of Chester, owner Marty Mehalko donated the use of one of his 16 foot trucks to the local US Marine Corp Toys for Tots campaign that helped over 300 children enjoy a little more holiday cheer. The local newspaper account of the party held for the kids mentioning Rent-A-Wreck is linked here.
